The Klondike - The Latest News
-- posted 14th april 2008

The latest illegal occupation of the Klondike, near Groby Pool, was ended when the last traveller caravan was removed off the site just after 4.00pm on Thursday 10th April 2008. Groby Parish Council will continue to work closely with HBBC to address the remaining issues on the site that remain of concern to Groby residents.

Mindful of the continued ambitions of travellers to establish a premanent presence on this site Groby Parish Council has serious concerns with regards to the real objective of the latest Planning Application submitted to HBBC on the Klondike Ref: 08/00186/FUL having objected in the strongest of terms against this application and would urge all Groby residents to object to this application.

Community Speed Watch Scheme
-- posted 12th March 2008

Community Speed Watch originated in Avon and Somerset due to an increased demand from the public for greater involvement in reducing the speed of vehicles through local villages. It involves the loaning of a speed detection device to Parish Councils or Traffic Action Groups to enable trained volunteers to undertake traffic monitoring.

To start a scheme in Groby support is required from local residents as well as the Parish Council and a minimum of 200 signatures are required to support the scheme. There must also be a minimum of 6 and a maximum of 16 volunteers who are willing to act as Community Speed Watch Volunteers. One of volunteers will act as co-ordinator and another as deputy, the co-ordinator must have access to e-mail.

The volunteers will be trained in the use of speed detection devices by the Community Speed Watch Co-ordinator for Leicestershire. Additional training will be provided in health and safety at the roadside and volunteers must adhere to operating procedures.

Taking part as a volunteer will not involve the stopping of vehicles, a log of vehicles exceeding an agreed speed threshold will be recorded and verified and forwarded to the co-ordinator who will in turn forward this to the Police for Police National Computer checks.

If you would like to support the introduction of a Community Speed Watch Scheme in the Parish please let us know by writing to PO Box 1, Village Hall, Leicester Road, Groby, LE6 0ZF. To enable your signature to be counted please ensure that you include in your letter the phrase:

“I pledge my support to the Community Speed Watch Scheme”.

Please also let us know if you would like to become a volunteer.

ALLOTMENTS
-- posted 12th March 2008

The Groby Allotment Society was formed in 1983 with the aim of providing the link between the allotment tenants and the Parish Council. The Society promotes allotment and leisure gardening as a recreational activity in the community. The Society is open to all allotment tenants and to individuals interested in the aims of the Society which is a member of the National Association of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners.

In April 2007 the Parish Council granted leases for the allotments sites at Ratby Road and Orchard Close to the Allotment Society and the administration of both sites rests with the Society, apart from the setting and collection of rents and certain administrative tasks which remain the responsibility of the Parish Council.

The Society maintains the waiting list for allotments, lets vacant plots, conducts site inspections, approves applications for sheds and fruit trees that meet the Council's guidelines.

If you are interested in becoming an allotment holder please contact Jamie Craig on 0116 287 6114.
