A5 between Hinckley and Tamworth recommended for improvement funding

The A5 between Hinckley and Tamworth has been recommended for improvement funding that would make the road ‘transformational’ for the Midlands.

Sub-national transport body Midlands Connect has included the 14-mile stretch of A5 on a list of priority projects it recommends for the next Road Investment Scheme 3 programme, to be delivered from 2025 to 2030.

While the government has made no commitment to fund the projects at this stage, Midlands Connect’s recommendation highlights the potential of an improved A5 for residents and businesses in the borough.

Midlands Connect say investment in this section of A5 could create 2,500 additional jobs, 5,000 new houses and 17,000 additional journeys per day.

The Borough Council are members of the A5 Partnership, a group of local councils and other key agencies working together to call for improvements to the A5. The partnership has been working with Midlands Connect and National Highways for many years to try to secure road improvements for the area.

Bill Cullen, Chief Executive of Hinckley and Bosworth Borough Council, said: “We’re pleased to learn of Midlands Connect’s recommendation. As a lead member of the A5 Partnership, we have played a pro-active part in driving forward the vision of improvements to this vital road for many years.”

Council Leader Stuart Bray added: “Such a project would bring great benefits to the borough of Hinckley and Bosworth, including relieving congestion, reduced journey times and more jobs for the benefit of residents and businesses.

“The government haven’t yet committed to funding the project, but we will be watching closely in the hope that improvements come to fruition over the coming years.”
